Soroptimist of Lodi Awarded Grant for HUGS Project 2010

Soroptimist International of Lodi recently submitted an application to WalMart and was granted $500 toward the HUGS project (Hope, Understanding, Goals and Support).  This project assists an emergency shelter through the gift of a 33 gallon trash can filled with supplies and necessities for women setting up their own homes after leaving a shelter.  Germaine Burke, past president of Soroptimist International of Lodi, got the idea for the grant through the Soroptimist, Best for Women magazine

A list of items needed was made up with help from Suzanne Mangum at Lodi House and Karen West at Hope Harbor.  With the budget in mind, $50 was spent per bin.  Ten Storage Bins were filled with laundry soap, trash bags, cleaning supplies and personal hygiene products so that five containers would go to Hope Harbor and another five to Lodi House.  The first week of February,  the filled garbage cans were presented by Bev Lacy and Germaine Burke to Lodi House and Hope Harbor.  This is just another way Soroptimists have found to help those women in need in the community.

Hygiene Kits for Haiti

Aidan Conner a pastor at First Baptist Church in Stockton is going on a missionary trip to Haiti in May 2010 and asked for help in putting together hygiene kits for the people of Haiti who had recently suffered a devastating Earth Quake.  Aidan's son is in a preschool class and they started the project to teach the children the joy of helping people in need.  Soroptimist of Lodi provided funds and Robyn Grace Jennings put together 29 kits for their project.

The Kits  included personal hygient products ie: toothbrushes, toothpaste, comb, towel and washcloth, band-aids and nail clippers.  We know the kits will be greatly appreciated.

SI Lodi members attended the Salvation Army Kettle Kickoff luncheon 2010

Chardonnay Hall was full of guests, and the chefs that prepared our meal were graduates from the culinary program who all volunteered their service for the day to give back to the organization that has given so much to them. It was a wonderful Thanksgiving meal including turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy. The Salvation Army’s goal of $75,000 was reached, and half of that was raised by Annette Murdaca so she won first place again as a Celebrity Bell Ringer.

We donated $1.000 of profits to the SIA Club Campaign for second  year in a row.

SI Lodi generously made donations of $250 to Lodi House in 2009 for their new program entitled “Gram’s Apron Pocket” and $1,000 to Salvation Army Hope Harbor to help out with their expenses during the holiday season.

We’re spreading the green and that should make us all feel good.
